Stereographic Library Collection, ca. 1800-1910.

The Stereographic Library Collection consists of 54 black and white stereographic cards. The photographic cards were produced by the Keystone View Company and are images of Chilkoot Pass including views of the "Golden-Stair-Case" going over the pass, as well as images of placer mining near the Yukon River. Other photographs of interest include miners, mining camps, and images of Dr. Sheldon Jackson and government reindeer at the mission at Haines, Alaska.

Sheldon Jackson organized pioneer Presbyterian churches and schools in the West and Alaska. He recognized the importance of women's missionary work and helped to establish the Women's Executive Committee in 1878. In 1885, he was appointed as general agent for education in Alaska. In 1891, Jackson was instrumental in introducing reindeer into Alaska to remedy the failing food supply due to whalers. He continued to be active in the church's missionary work until his death.
